Training for clinicians who see men

Stop men slipping through the cracks

Men in Mind is the world's first online training program built for the health professionals men actually turn to. CPD-accredited, video-led, and grounded in the latest evidence on engaging male clients.

of men who die by suicide accessed health services in their last year of life.*

Working with men is complex — from helping them access and describe their emotional world, to responding to anger or aggression in men in suicidal crisis. And it isn't only therapists who carry that weight. GPs, nurses and pharmacists are often the first — and only — clinician a man speaks to.

Men in Mind equips both groups with practical, evidence-based skills to reach, respond to, and retain men in care.

*Extrapolating from AIHW service-access data: an estimated 87% of Australian men who died by suicide in 2024 (2,198 men) had accessed a health service in the preceding year.

What you'll learn

Skills you can use
in your next appointment.

A shared toolkit — adapted to your discipline — for engaging male clients, recognising risk, and keeping men in care. Here's a taste of what's in the modules.

  1. 01

    Engage

Get men past the small-talk barrier and into the conversation that matters — even when they don't have the words for it yet.

    • Open with a man's frame, not yours
    • Hold the silence; let him fill it
    • Spot the moments men are about to disengage
  2. 02

    Recognise

See low mood in men when it doesn't look like low mood — and know what suicide risk in men actually presents as.

    • Read the atypical male presentations
    • Screen without losing rapport
    • Identify the warning signs men hide first
  3. 03

    Retain

Keep men coming back. Reframe the visit so the next appointment feels like progress to him, not surrender.

    • Bring masculinity into how you frame care
    • Respond to anger or aggression without shutdown
    • Hand off cleanly when you're not the right clinician

Feedback from course participants

It was great. I appreciated the chance to improve my knowledge — I've not had any previous specific training on working with men in my thirty-year career.

Julie Sparrow

Accredited mental health social worker

Thank you for your excellent and thought-provoking training. It really highlighted for me the importance of applying a gendered lens when working with male clients. The format made it easily accessible, interesting and clear to follow.

Poppy Kousidis

Psychologist

Thought the training was well created — enjoyed the use of videos and tracking "real" clients. It made it much more practical and engaging.

Maddi Leydin

Provisional psychologist

Overall, an incredibly helpful and insightful course. I rewatched the presentation with my 17-year-old son who also thought it was very good — it validated some of the perspectives he had offered during past conversations around vulnerability in young men. Such an important area of work.

Michelle Stellini

Registered counsellor

It was awesome and refreshing to hear and learn about men in a way that isn't leading to "toxic" mind frames of masculinity.

David Frost

Postvention coordinator

This is an incredibly targeted, well-researched and easily digestible, accessible resource. The Men in Mind program is a powerful resource for men and the people who care about men. Thanks for putting it together.

Christina McPhail

Healing justice practitioner

A must-have for therapists working with male clients. It delves into the intersection of masculinity and mental health, offering practical strategies for addressing depression and preventing suicide in men. The culturally sensitive, evidence-based approach makes it adaptable to cultures the world over.
